Strengthening Community and Culture Among Kericho County Students at Kisii University

**Kisii, Kenya** — The Kericho County Students Association (KECOSA) is making significant strides in fostering a sense of community, cultural pride, and academic welfare among students from Kericho County studying at Kisii University. Founded on the principles of unity and support, KECOSA provides a home away from home for its members, ensuring they are well-represented and cared for during their academic journey.


With a robust leadership structure led by Chairperson KIPKIRUI GEDION, KECOSA comprises 17 dedicated executives, each tasked with specific roles aimed at enhancing the welfare of its members. The executive team includes a Vice Chair, Secretary General, Organizing Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Secretary, two Welfare Secretaries, a Project Coordinator, a Legal Advisor, and a Sports and Culture Director, alongside sub-county representatives from various regions within Kericho County.

“KECOSA is not just an association; it’s a family,” said Chairperson Kipkirui Gedion. “Our mission is to ensure that every student from Kericho County feels supported, safe, and proud of their cultural heritage.” This commitment has seen the association organize various sports and cultural events, fostering camaraderie and a strong sense of identity among its members.


The welfare of KECOSA members remains a key focus, with initiatives aimed at addressing both academic and social needs. This includes mentorship programs, academic support, and social events that enhance interaction among students. “We believe that a strong network and support system can significantly improve the academic experience and overall well-being of our students,” added Gedion.

In addition to promoting cultural activities, KECOSA is dedicated to advocating for the rights and interests of its members. The association's legal advisor plays a crucial role in ensuring that students are informed about their rights and protected from any injustices they may face during their time at the university.


The association's recognition at Kisii University underscores its importance in the student community. KECOSA has established itself as a credible voice for Kericho County students, collaborating with university administration, local leaders, and various organizations to enhance the student experience. “We take pride in our achievements and the recognition we've received from the university. It motivates us to keep pushing for better conditions for our students,” noted the Publicity Secretary.

The association also encourages support from community stakeholders, including church leaders, political figures, and residents of Kericho County. “We are calling upon everyone to rally behind KECOSA. Together, we can foster an environment that not only nurtures academic excellence but also celebrates our rich culture,” emphasized Gedion.


Looking ahead, KECOSA aims to expand its outreach programs and strengthen ties with other student associations across the country. The leadership plans to host larger events that showcase Kericho County’s culture, providing a platform for members to interact with other communities and share their rich heritage.
